Here is the post from my first full day in Augusta (Friday the 20th) . Will try to get the second day's adventures up tomorrow or later in the week. Enjoy this for now!
After getting up early to watch the Patriots’ second preseason game, I was ready to start the day. The three of us set out to walk out to the point where the Blackwood River meets the Southern Ocean. Apparently, they are extending the point by digging a trench type thing in order to reduce flood risks.
We then went to go on a tour and walk up the Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse (Dutch for female lion according to Colin) but it wasn’t open until tomorrow. Instead, we checked out the water wheel, a contraption that was used to bring water to the people who worked at the lighthouse.
On the way to our main destination, Foul Bay, we stopped by Flinder's Bay where there is a nice calm bit of water called Granny's Pool ("where all the Grandma's do their water exercise" as Craig phrased it. Perfect for you Grammy!)

Played on the swings for a little and got great prices on sand and sticks at Craig's general store.
We then got back in the car and drove to Foul Bay. We brought along a ball for each of our respective homes – American football, Aussie football, and a soccer ball. Fun playing around with the different ones.
Foul Bay was really beautiful – blue water, nice long empty beach, and cool rocks to climb.

Think this is one of my favorites. |
Craig knew about this rock called Elephant Rock where you could go jump off of so we set off on a hike.

I deemed myself official team photographer and sat this one out. Although I trusted Craig - and their jumps were totally fine - I didn’t like not being able to scan the water beneath me for rocks.
After the two of them jumped we hiked back to the beach where Craig tried to teach us how to use the Skimboard.

I got one or two runs where I sort of got it, but definitely need some practice.

With the sun starting to go down we headed back to Craig’s but not before buying heaps of snacks and meats to barbeque.
1 ½ burgers and a sausage later, it was time to change Craig and Colin’s lives. See in Australia, they do not have graham crackers, which means … they do not know what s’mores are! Blasphemy! I decided to fix this. Bought these biscuit / cookies type thing made by Arnott’s (a cookie company that so far has not made a cookie I didn’t like), Cadbury chocolate (again, no Hershey’s here), and these no-name brand marshmallows (which unfortunately and unbeknownst to me, were half strawberry flavored.)
Despite the lack of graham crackers and the oddly flavored marshmallows, they were a big hit.
Oh and here is a panorama from the day before that wouldn't upload the first time I tried. Click on it to see the full version.
To a symphony of packing tape and mumbly movers, we are looking at your photos and thinking, Sigh, that looks nice. Let's go there!
ReplyDeleteSeriously, doggy, such incredible landscapes. You capture it all so beautifully!
(and just think, if they liked the funky strawberry marshmallow s'mores, minds will be SERIOUSLY blown when they have the real, gloriously processed thing)
Well, you're a great ambassador, sharing the wonders of American s'mores! It looks as if you're having so much fun with your new buddies and enjoying some great and silly good fun with them. I couldn't agree more with Audrey as far as the exceptional photos and landscapes; those panoramas are breathtaking. I just can't wait to see some of these places, or others like them. And what a pretty little crab.
ReplyDeleteI love the photo of your friends walking down the rock, with the water just beyond. And (big surprise coming from your mum) I'm glad you're being careful with those leaps! I just went back and looked at the last set of photos, by the way--those reflections of the sky in the water are exquisite, too.
Thank you so much for sharing all of this with us. I know it takes time and effort, but boy oh boy, do we appreciate it!
What an astounding bunch of pictures, Boo! You and your pals are intrepid explorers. And I'm so glad that you're documenting it all.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely agreeing with Audrey on this one, though -- if they liked strawberry-tainted s'mores, the REAL DEAL will rock their socks.
Also, you should probably tell Craig and his fellow quintuplets that they should space out their jumps. It's pretty dangerous to jump in such rapid succession... ; )
Love you Boo! So proud!

Thanks for thinking of me. Sorry that I can't be there to see you and to go for a dip in the Granny Cove! Love, Grammy
ReplyDeleteThese photographs are fantastic. I feel like I'm there with you. Can't wait.
ReplyDeletePS you really will stun your pals when they taste a smore with DARK chocolate not that milky stuff. Leave me alone with the strawberry marshmallows will you! Did you ever taste strawberry Nestle's Quick? Blech!
I've been following you religiously, as in daily! Time to tell you that it's an enormous pleasure and I am totally blown away by your photographs! The more traditional landscapes, escapades, companions etc are terrific but I also love the playing around, experimental ones. I think I saw the peacock in the abstracts, which are really weirdly compelling. Thank you!

Wow! Thank you guys all so much! I'm lucky to have such great readers. Really really happy you are all enjoying my posts. Means a lot to me. Congratulations on the move Audge! Still waiting on some pics! And real s'mores would definitely have been a game changer.
ReplyDeleteJulian, I just read this post again... I am so jealous, I wish I had come to Augusta. :(
